“If that career in research ever falls through, I think you have a second calling in tulips,” Callie said, stepping back to admire Jared’s handiwork. The two of them had put together a dozen vase centerpieces featuring bright red tulips, white lilies, grape hyacinths, snow drops and ranunculus. Callie had also put together a long table arrangement to run down the bridal banquet table, and created matching corsages and boutonnieres for the wedding party. She put the finishing touches on the bride’s crescent bouquet, then gave Jared a high-five. “You’re pretty good at this.”

He grinned. “I had a good teacher. But don’t let this get back to the guys in the lab or I’ll never live it down.”

“What, flower designing is less manly than doing research for ‘A Hundred Questions To Ask Your Honey In The Bedroom?’ or whatever the game is that you’re designing?”

“Definitely. Sex research is way more cool.” He flexed a bicep beneath his new shirt. “See how cool I look now?”

She laughed. “Last I checked, you weren’t getting very far in your sex research.”

“Take me home and we’ll see how far I get.”

She slugged him, sending a couple of tulips tumbling to the floor. “You are turning into quite the incorrigible man.”

“All your fault. I was a respectable, tie-wearing, clipboard-carrying research scientist before you came back into my life.” He picked up the flowers, then came around behind Callie to place them back on the workbench. Her heart raced, every fiber of her painfully aware of Jared behind her, of the heat of his body, so close. “You have ruined me,” he whispered in her ear.

“Well, good,” she said back, intending to sound flip, to keep treating this like a game.

Only it had stopped being a game somewhere during that kiss back at her apartment. Something had shifted between them and turned what she’d thought had been a moment of levity into something far more serious.

Something Callie hadn’t been prepared to handle. Before he’d arrived, she’d been planning to end their relationship, to go back to being just friends. After all, she’d accomplished her goal. She’d wanted to make up for the way she’d broken up with Jared in college, maybe up-end his research plans a little, but now, there was a decided edge between them—

An edge that had taken their relationship to a whole new level. One she couldn’t ignore or dismiss.

The kind of level that spelled permanence. Settling down.

Because she knew Jared. He was a white picket fence, golden retriever, hang your name on the door knocker kind of guy all the way.

Callie lived as far from that as possible. She’d grown up in a family that had disintegrated into chaos, and like a couch potato who’d found his sweet spot on the sofa, she knew that topsy-turvy world better than the one Jared came from. Callie had seen too often how wrong “happily ever after” could go, and even though she made her living at tying all those kinds of happy endings up with a pretty bow and a daisy, she didn’t believe for a second that the same could work for her.
